Gold price per gram in the Gulf, by karat
Every row starts from the same international ounce price, so the table is a fair way to compare markets. The Qatari riyal, the dirham and the Saudi riyal are pegged to the dollar at fixed rates; the Kuwaiti dinar follows a currency basket and moves a little.
| Country | 24K | 22K | 21K | 18K | Currency |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qatar | 484.86 | 444.46 | 424.25 | 363.65 | QAR |
| UAE | 489.19 | 448.42 | 428.04 | 366.89 | AED |
| Saudi Arabia | 499.51 | 457.89 | 437.07 | 374.64 | SAR |
| Kuwait | 41.007 | 37.590 | 35.881 | 30.755 | KWD |
Why does the jeweller ask more than this table?
The table shows the value of the gold metal only. A shop adds a making charge for the work and its own margin, and the making charge on a plain ring is nothing like the one on a heavy wedding set. When you sell, it runs the other way: shops usually buy below the reference gram price.
So we publish the reference price as it is and let you work out the gap. Ask the shop for the gram price and the making charge separately, then compare the gram price with this page.
The ounce price comes from gold-api.com, and the 3.64 riyal peg is stated in Qatar Central Bank's review as reported by Gulf Times, and the dinar rate comes from the Central Bank of Kuwait. Formulas are on the how we calculate page.
